Comparing Merchant and Trader Prices - Most of the time, the gold you would get by selling an item to a normal merchant is less than you would get by selling the same Karahan online gold item to an appropriate trader.
Dyes always sell for 1g to merchants but sell much better to traders. Runes sell for roughly 25g to merchants but may sell for much more to traders. Finally, crafting materials nearly always sell for more to traders than to merchants.
So, as a rule, selling items to an appropriate trader is better than selling them to a merchant. But like most rules, this rule has an exception. From post-Searing Ascalon onward, you will begin finding salvage items with purple - and yellow-colored text, which indicate high rarity.
If you identify them, chances are good that they will contain a rune of some attribute. If the rune wouldn't be useful to you and if you don't want to spend time trying to sell it to a player, then doesn’t expert-salvage the item immediately.
Instead, see how much gold a merchant would give you for the salvage item. Now go to a rune trader and see what the last sale price of the rune was.
